The women killed on one day around the world

25 November 2018

An average of 137 women across the world are killed by a partner or family member every day

An average of 137 women across the world are killed by a partner or family member every day, according to new data released by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

They say it makes "the home the most likely place for a woman to be killed".

More than half of the 87,000 women killed in 2017 were reported as dying at the hands of those closest to them.

Of that figure, approximately[각주:1] 30,000 women were killed by an intimate[각주:2] partner and another 20,000 by a relative.

Male homicide rates still higher

The data collected by UNODC highlights that "men are around four times more likely than women to lose their lives as a result of intentional homicide".

The UN indicates that men accounted for eight out of 10 homicide victims worldwide.

However, the same report suggests that more than eight out of 10 victims of homicides committed by intimate partners are female.

"Intimate partner violence continues to take a disproportionately[각주:3] heavy toll on[각주:4] women," the report states.

The UN statistics summarise the findings for 2017 based on homicide statistics[각주:5] provided by government sources. The figures for "gender-related killings of women and girls", or "femicide", are collated[각주:6] using the criteria[각주:7] of intimate partner/family-related homicide.

BBC 100 Women and BBC Monitoring set out to find out more about the women behind the numbers.

We monitored press coverage of women killed by another person on 1 October 2018 around the world. Our regional[각주:8] specialists counted 47 women reported killed, apparently[각주:9] for gender-related reasons, in 21 different countries. Most of these killings are still being investigated.

Here are five of these cases, reported initially[각주:10] by local media and then verified[각주:11] by local authorities[각주:12] the BBC contacted.

Judith Chesang, 22, Kenya

On Monday 1 October, Judith Chesang and her sister Nancy were out in the fields harvesting their sorghum[각주:13] crop.

Judith, a mother of three, had recently separated from her husband, Laban Kamuren, and had decided to return to her parents' village in the north of the country.

Soon after the sisters began their duties, he arrived at the family farm where he attacked and killed Judith.

Local police say he has since been killed by villagers.

Africa was where women ran the greatest risk of being killed by their intimate partner or family member, the UN report says. It occurred[각주:14] at a rate of 3.1 deaths per 100,000 people.

Asia had the greatest number of women killed by intimate partners or family members in 2017, with a total of 20,000.

Neha Sharad Chaudury, 18, India

Neha Sharad Chaudury died in a suspected "honour" killing on her 18th birthday. She had been out celebrating with her boyfriend. Police confirmed to the BBC that her parents did not approve[각주:15] of the relationship.

Her parents and another male relative are accused[각주:16] of killing her in their home that evening.

The investigation continues and the three remain in judicial custody awaiting trial.

The BBC has learned from the lawyer representing Neha's parents and her male relative that they intend to deny the charges.

Hundreds of people are killed each year for falling in love or marrying against their families' wishes. Official data on so-called honour killings is hard to come by as such crimes are often unrecorded or unreported.

Zeinab Sekaanvan, 24, Iran

Zeinab Sekaanvan was executed by the Iranian authorities for murdering her husband.

Zeinab was born in the north-west of Iran into a poor conservative family of Kurdish origin. She ran away as a teenager to marry in the hope of finding a better life.

Amnesty International says her husband was abusive and had refused to grant her a divorce, and that her complaints were ignored by police.

She was arrested for the killing of her husband at the age of 17.

Her supporters, including Amnesty, say she was tortured to confess to the killing of her husband, beaten by police and did not receive a fair trial.

The UNODC report suggests women who kill intimate partners have often experienced "extended periods[각주:17] of suffering physical violence".

Meanwhile, the motivations typically expressed by male perpetrators[각주:18] include "possessiveness[각주:19], jealousy and fear of abandonment", the report says. This appears to be the case with another long-term couple who were found dead in Brazil on the same day that Zeinab was executed.

Sandra Lucia Hammer Moura, 39, Brazil

Sandra Lucia Hammer Moura married Augusto Aguiar Ribeiro at the age of 16.

The couple had been separated for five months when she was killed by him.

Police in Jardim Taquari confirmed to BBC Brasil that she was stabbed in the neck.

They found a video of her husband confessing to the crime on his mobile phone. In it, he said that Sandra was already dating another man and he felt betrayed.

He also said in the video that he would not be arrested as the couple would go to the "glory of the Lord" together. He then hanged himself in what had been their bedroom.

Sandra's case highlights a form of killing known as a "murder-suicide" - when an individual kills one or more people before killing themselves.

BBC Monitoring found 14 cases of women killed on 1 October this year in Latin America. Two were in El Salvador.

Authorities in El Salvador have told the BBC that at least 300 women have been killed so far in 2018. Karla Turcios is one of them. Watch her story here.

Marie-Amélie Vaillat, 36, France

Marie-Amélie was stabbed to death by her husband, Sébastien Vaillat.

The couple had separated after four years of marriage.

He attacked her with a knife before confessing to the police. A few days later, he killed himself in prison.

Outside the door of Marie-Amélie Vaillat's lingerie shop on Rue Bichat, residents left a sea of flowers and organised a march in her memory.

The killing of Marie-Amélie came on the same day that the French government announced new plans to tackle domestic abuse.

What does it take for a woman's killing to be reported?

To collect these stories, BBC Monitoring's international network of journalists and researchers analysed TV, radio, print, online and social media around the world, looking for reports of women killed, apparently for gender-related reasons, on 1 October 2018.

They found a total of 47 reports of women killed on that one day around the world. We have shared just some of those cases. There are many more where the motives were unclear, or the perpetrators unidentified.

The new UNODC report suggests that a large share of violence against women is "widely underreported to authorities and that a large share of such violence is hidden".

Rebecca Skippage, who led the project for BBC Monitoring, found that behind the numbers, "the way in which the media reported their lives and deaths revealed[각주:20] a huge amount about how women are viewed by different societies around the world".

She explains: "We were looking for deaths within one day, but we searched for that day's stories for a month. We found that the time-lag[각주:21] in reporting, the tone of the coverage or the scarcity[각주:22] of information often told a wider tale about the status of women in that region."

Maryam Azwer works for BBC Monitoring and drew much of the final data together.

"This is as much about the deaths that aren't reported, as those that are," she says.

"Those whose stories never reached the media, that went unreported, were unverified, or were not or could not be investigated. It makes you wonder: what does it take to make a woman's killing important enough to be reported?"

South Korea Loves Plastic Surgery and Makeup. Some Women Want to Change That.

Gender inequality and the global #MeToo movement have fueled “Escape the Corset,” a campaign to cast off[각주:1] the country’s rigid[각주:2] beauty standards.

SEOUL, South Korea — Kim Ji-yeon knew she wanted plastic surgery when she was 7. For the next 13 years, she destroyed photos of herself until her parents paid for double jaw[각주:3] surgery, a procedure[각주:4] that requires breaking the jaw to realign[각주:5] it.

Then Ms. Kim started to question why she devoted[각주:6] so much — $200 a month and two hours a day, she calculated — to her appearance. She cut her hair short. Then she crushed her makeup into pieces.

Ms. Kim, 22, is one of a growing group of South Korean women rebelling against their society’s rigid beauty standards — a push they call “Escape the Corset.” Inspired in part by the global #MeToo movement, which has shaken up politics and society in South Korea’s deeply patriarchal culture, the women are challenging long-accepted attitudes about plastic surgery and cosmetics in one of the world’s most beauty-obsessed capitals.

“Misogyny is more extreme in South Korea, and the beauty industry has made it worse,” said Ms. Kim.

Beauty is big in South Korea. It has the world’s highest rate of cosmetic surgery per capita[각주:7], and it keeps rising. It has become a destination for nip-and-tuck tourism. The beauty market — cosmetics and facial care products like masks — generated[각주:8] $13 billion in sales last year, according to Mintel, making it one of the world’s top 10 beauty markets.

While men are an increasing part of the market, the beauty pressure is aimed mostly at women. K-pop stars who often get extensive cosmetic surgery are held up as the standard. YouTube celebrities with millions of followers offer elaborate[각주:9] tutorials on how to apply makeup. Women are bombard[각주:10]ed with ads across buses, in subways and on TV.

“Born pretty?” reads one in the Seoul subway. “That’s a big fat[각주:11] lie.”

“We go through 12 steps just to put on the basic products before we even apply makeup,” said Ms. Kim. “That basically defines the problem.”

Women are now pushing back. This summer, tens of thousands gathered to protest against sexual assault, the proliferation[각주:12] of spy cameras taking voyeuristic[각주:13] videos of women and the harsher[각주:14] standards they face in other aspect[각주:15]s of society, from beauty to the law.

Political and economic disparities[각주:16] fuel the anger. South Korea’s wage gap is the highest among countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Women hold just one-sixth of the seats in the National Assembly and one-tenth of corporate management positions.

“The intensity of feminism in South Korea is stronger than in other countries because women really are not part of the political and economic leadership,” said Yunkim Ji-yeong, an assistant professor of feminist philosophy at the Institute[각주:17] of Body and Culture at Konkuk University.

In that environment, Escape the Corset has found an audience.

Bae Eun-jeong, known as Lina Bae, was a YouTube star who gave beauty tutorials. After hearing about the anti-corset movement earlier this year, Ms. Bae, 21, took a closer look at the comments on her YouTube channel. Many were from young girls who said makeup gave them the courage to go to school

“I realized there was something very wrong,” said Ms. Bae. “I wanted to do a new kind of video to tell them that it’s O.K. not to make yourself up.”

In June, Ms. Bae uploaded a video in which she goes through the laborious[각주:18] process of applying creams, foundation, eyeliner and fake eyelashes. A series of simulated[각주:19] messages like those she has received in the past scroll across the screen. One says: “Your eyes are freaking uneven.” Another one: “I would kill myself if I were you.”

Then she takes off all the makeup and tells the viewer, “Don’t be so concerned with how others perceive[각주:20] you. You’re special and pretty the way you are.”

The video has been watched 5.5 million times. Ms. Bae’s YouTube followers jumped to nearly 147,000 from 20,000. A publisher asked her to write a book. She has since [각주:21]cut her hair short and stopped wearing makeup, saving nearly $500 a month. Now her videos focus on cooking and sharing ideas.

Cha Ji-won, a video content creator at an urban renewal company, joined the movement earlier this year and created her own YouTube channel, which now has 30,000 followers. Ms. Cha, 22, once thought that spending as much as $700 on makeup each month was not enough. Now she has turned her makeup into slime to play with.

“They are sort of like toys, like crayons,” said Ms. Cha. She used to feel like a second-class citizen, she said, but now that she has stopped wearing makeup “people listen to me when I say things.”

The movement has sparked an ugly backlash.

Ms. Bae, Ms. Kim and Ms. Cha, who all have bowl haircuts characteristic of the movement, say they have become targets of verbal abuse and death threats. Ms. Kim was told by two prospective[각주:22] bosses that she did not look feminine enough. Feminists talk about their peer[각주:23]s “coming out” publicly because many prefer to stay anonymous.

“The violence against people who leave the mainstream path[각주:24] is very intense in South Korea compared to other countries,” said Seo Sol, 26, who has a YouTube talk show about feminism called “Because There Is Too Much to Say.”

Yim Hyun-ju has experienced the criticism. The 33-year-old anchor at Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation, a national broadcaster, decided to wear her glasses on her morning news show on April 12. Her fake eyelashes were making her eyes so tired that she was going through a bottle of artificial[각주:25] tears every day.

It became an online sensation. “I did not think it would become news,” Ms. Yim said.

Ms. Yim’s producers reproached[각주:26] her. Viewers wrote to complain. But women came up to her in public to thank her. Now Ms. Yim wears her glasses from time to time[각주:27], an act that she says sends viewers a message to judge her based on her competence[각주:28] and not her appearance. But she doesn’t want to be identified as part of any movement.

“If I could act freely, I would apply makeup less,” Ms. Yim said.

“But I’m stuck between my mind and heart, which says one thing, but there is the reality of my job,” she added.

Many women in the anti-corset movement credit their actions as having had a small impact on the makeup industry. One recent ad, for the Missha cosmetics brand, features a short-haired model and one with freckles. “Get out, expose your flaws[각주:29] and follow your own standards rather than others’,” it says. Still, they note[각주:30], the women in the ad largely stick to[각주:31] Korean beauty standards — and the women are wearing makeup.

Kim Hong-tae, a spokesman for Able C&C, which owns the Missha brand, said the ad was meant to convey[각주:32] “that there is no predetermined standard of physical appearance.”

And the social pressure to wear makeup and have a small, heart-shaped face is still strong. Im Soo-hyang stars in a Korean drama called “My ID is Gangnam Beauty,” about a young woman who has plastic surgery and grapples with[각주:33] image issues. The name refers to[각주:34] the upscale[각주:35] Gangnam district in Seoul, where plastic surgery clinics line the streets.

“I can’t say I’m free from being conscious about people paying attention to me because of the nature of my job,” Ms. Im said during an interview at a hair salon in Gangnam. “Look at me. I have my hair done, I’m wearing makeup, I have my nails done and I’m wearing pretty clothes.”

She smiled, then added, “I cannot be liberated[각주:36].”

Women tweeting #ThisIsNotConsent after underwear used as evidence in rape trial

Updated 1206 GMT (2006 HKT) November 15, 2018

(CNN)Women around the world are posting pictures of their underwear on Twitter after a 27-year-old man was acquitted[각주:1] in a rape trial in Ireland during which a teenager's thong[각주:2] was used as evidence.

A jury[각주:3] in the criminal court[각주:4] in the city of Cork took an hour and a half deliberating[각주:5] on November 6 to declare[각주:6] the defendant[각주:7] not guilty of raping a 17-year-old in a lane[각주:8] at night.

In her final address[각주:9], defense barrister[각주:10] Elizabeth O'Connell asked the jurors[각주:11] to take into account[각주:12] the underwear the teenager was wearing.
"Does the evidence out-rule[각주:13] the possibility that she was attracted to the defendant and was open to meeting someone and being with someone? You have to look at the way she was dressed. She was wearing a thong with a lace front," she said, according to the Irish Examiner.
Irish Examiner.
Using a thong as evidence of implied[각주:14] consent[각주:15] was considered victim-blaming by many women on social media, who started publishing pictures of their underwear using the #ThisIsNotConsent hashtag.\
"We had hoped that as a society we had moved on from these archaic[각주:18], victim-blaming rape myths," Susan Dillon, who is part of a group of women in Ireland who came up with the hashtag and tried to spread the word, told CNN.
Earlier this year, Dillon set up the "I Believe Her - Ireland" Twitter page with the aim of providing an anonymous and safe space for survivors of sexual violence to share their stories and to get support.
She did so after the Belfast rape trial in March 2018 in which former[각주:19] Ulster rugby players Paddy Jackson and Stuart Olding were cleared of raping a student at a house party, another controversial[각주:20] sentencing[각주:21] that ignited[각주:22] protests.
Ruth Coppinger, a socialist[각주:23] member of the Irish parliament[각주:24], tweeted a picture of her underwear after she said she displayed it in Dáil Éireann, the assembly's[각주:25] lower house. She also urged her followers to join protests in Dublin against the Cork verdict:
"I hear cameras cut away from me when I displayed this underwear in #Dáil. In courts victims can have their underwear passed around as evidence and it's within the rules, hence[각주:26] need to display in Dáil."
The protests across Ireland are being organized by the socialist feminist organization ROSA. Supporters are asked to bring along their underwear.
Other women from across the world joined the #ThisIsNotConsent.
"I'm a feminist and human rights supporter who is frustrated that this argument is being used in a 21st century Irish court of law," Michelle Sullivan, who is based in Canada, told CNN.
Emily Buell, from San Jose, California, also shared pictures of her underwear: "How are we living in 2018? Women are feeling empowered[각주:27], finally, with the #metoo movement letting women of all age speak up."
      Others were not surprised.
"The story unfortunately didn't shock me, because harmful attitudes like this seem to be widespread, but it did anger me," said Courtney Peterson, who is based in England. "To think that a young girl has already been through so much trauma and she's had to listen to older professional people implying[각주:28] that she's to blame is horrible."
