South Korea Loves Plastic Surgery and Makeup. Some Women Want to Change That.

SEOUL, South Korea — Kim Ji-yeon knew she wanted plastic surgery when she was 7. For the next 13 years, she destroyed photos of herself until her parents paid for double jaw[각주:3] surgery, a procedure[각주:4] that requires breaking the jaw to realign[각주:5] it.

Then Ms. Kim started to question why she devoted[각주:6] so much — $200 a month and two hours a day, she calculated — to her appearance. She cut her hair short. Then she crushed her makeup into pieces.

Ms. Kim, 22, is one of a growing group of South Korean women rebelling against their society’s rigid beauty standards — a push they call “Escape the Corset.” Inspired in part by the global #MeToo movement, which has shaken up politics and society in South Korea’s deeply patriarchal culture, the women are challenging long-accepted attitudes about plastic surgery and cosmetics in one of the world’s most beauty-obsessed capitals.

“Misogyny is more extreme in South Korea, and the beauty industry has made it worse,” said Ms. Kim.

Beauty is big in South Korea. It has the world’s highest rate of cosmetic surgery per capita[각주:7], and it keeps rising. It has become a destination for nip-and-tuck tourism. The beauty market — cosmetics and facial care products like masks — generated[각주:8] $13 billion in sales last year, according to Mintel, making it one of the world’s top 10 beauty markets.

While men are an increasing part of the market, the beauty pressure is aimed mostly at women. K-pop stars who often get extensive cosmetic surgery are held up as the standard. YouTube celebrities with millions of followers offer elaborate[각주:9] tutorials on how to apply makeup. Women are bombard[각주:10]ed with ads across buses, in subways and on TV.

“Born pretty?” reads one in the Seoul subway. “That’s a big fat[각주:11] lie.”

“We go through 12 steps just to put on the basic products before we even apply makeup,” said Ms. Kim. “That basically defines the problem.”

Women are now pushing back. This summer, tens of thousands gathered to protest against sexual assault, the proliferation[각주:12] of spy cameras taking voyeuristic[각주:13] videos of women and the harsher[각주:14] standards they face in other aspect[각주:15]s of society, from beauty to the law.

Political and economic disparities[각주:16] fuel the anger. South Korea’s wage gap is the highest among countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Women hold just one-sixth of the seats in the National Assembly and one-tenth of corporate management positions.

“The intensity of feminism in South Korea is stronger than in other countries because women really are not part of the political and economic leadership,” said Yunkim Ji-yeong, an assistant professor of feminist philosophy at the Institute[각주:17] of Body and Culture at Konkuk University.

In that environment, Escape the Corset has found an audience.

Bae Eun-jeong, known as Lina Bae, was a YouTube star who gave beauty tutorials. After hearing about the anti-corset movement earlier this year, Ms. Bae, 21, took a closer look at the comments on her YouTube channel. Many were from young girls who said makeup gave them the courage to go to school

“I realized there was something very wrong,” said Ms. Bae. “I wanted to do a new kind of video to tell them that it’s O.K. not to make yourself up.”

In June, Ms. Bae uploaded a video in which she goes through the laborious[각주:18] process of applying creams, foundation, eyeliner and fake eyelashes. A series of simulated[각주:19] messages like those she has received in the past scroll across the screen. One says: “Your eyes are freaking uneven.” Another one: “I would kill myself if I were you.”

Then she takes off all the makeup and tells the viewer, “Don’t be so concerned with how others perceive[각주:20] you. You’re special and pretty the way you are.”

The video has been watched 5.5 million times. Ms. Bae’s YouTube followers jumped to nearly 147,000 from 20,000. A publisher asked her to write a book. She has since [각주:21]cut her hair short and stopped wearing makeup, saving nearly $500 a month. Now her videos focus on cooking and sharing ideas.

Cha Ji-won, a video content creator at an urban renewal company, joined the movement earlier this year and created her own YouTube channel, which now has 30,000 followers. Ms. Cha, 22, once thought that spending as much as $700 on makeup each month was not enough. Now she has turned her makeup into slime to play with.

“They are sort of like toys, like crayons,” said Ms. Cha. She used to feel like a second-class citizen, she said, but now that she has stopped wearing makeup “people listen to me when I say things.”

The movement has sparked an ugly backlash.

Ms. Bae, Ms. Kim and Ms. Cha, who all have bowl haircuts characteristic of the movement, say they have become targets of verbal abuse and death threats. Ms. Kim was told by two prospective[각주:22] bosses that she did not look feminine enough. Feminists talk about their peer[각주:23]s “coming out” publicly because many prefer to stay anonymous.

“The violence against people who leave the mainstream path[각주:24] is very intense in South Korea compared to other countries,” said Seo Sol, 26, who has a YouTube talk show about feminism called “Because There Is Too Much to Say.”

Yim Hyun-ju has experienced the criticism. The 33-year-old anchor at Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation, a national broadcaster, decided to wear her glasses on her morning news show on April 12. Her fake eyelashes were making her eyes so tired that she was going through a bottle of artificial[각주:25] tears every day.

It became an online sensation. “I did not think it would become news,” Ms. Yim said.

Ms. Yim’s producers reproached[각주:26] her. Viewers wrote to complain. But women came up to her in public to thank her. Now Ms. Yim wears her glasses from time to time[각주:27], an act that she says sends viewers a message to judge her based on her competence[각주:28] and not her appearance. But she doesn’t want to be identified as part of any movement.

“If I could act freely, I would apply makeup less,” Ms. Yim said.

“The violence against people who leave the mainstream path is very intense in South Korea,” said Seo Sol, right, who has a YouTube talk show about feminism.CreditJean Chung for The New York Times

“But I’m stuck between my mind and heart, which says one thing, but there is the reality of my job,” she added.

Many women in the anti-corset movement credit their actions as having had a small impact on the makeup industry. One recent ad, for the Missha cosmetics brand, features a short-haired model and one with freckles. “Get out, expose your flaws[각주:29] and follow your own standards rather than others’,” it says. Still, they note[각주:30], the women in the ad largely stick to[각주:31] Korean beauty standards — and the women are wearing makeup.

Kim Hong-tae, a spokesman for Able C&C, which owns the Missha brand, said the ad was meant to convey[각주:32] “that there is no predetermined standard of physical appearance.”

And the social pressure to wear makeup and have a small, heart-shaped face is still strong. Im Soo-hyang stars in a Korean drama called “My ID is Gangnam Beauty,” about a young woman who has plastic surgery and grapples with[각주:33] image issues. The name refers to[각주:34] the upscale[각주:35] Gangnam district in Seoul, where plastic surgery clinics line the streets.

“I can’t say I’m free from being conscious about people paying attention to me because of the nature of my job,” Ms. Im said during an interview at a hair salon in Gangnam. “Look at me. I have my hair done, I’m wearing makeup, I have my nails done and I’m wearing pretty clothes.”

She smiled, then added, “I cannot be liberated[각주:36].”

Jeff Kinney takes "Wimpy Kid" from page to stage

Wimpy isn't the word you would use to describe a Jeff Kinney book tour. The latest tour for the author of the best-selling "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" books began Tuesday, October 30 in Boston, Massachusetts. After a stop in nearby Plainville, where Kinney lives, he heads to nine U.S. cities. In mid-November he's on to Europe — six countries in 21 days.

Considering "The Meltdown" is No. 13 in the series, you might expect Kinney's next book to be "Diary of a Weary[각주:1] Writer." But instead of slowing down, the author is changing up what he does when he meets his many fans. He's doing a few typical talks and book signings, but Kinney is also putting on a show.

"We thought it would be really fun to change the idea of what a book signing is," Kinney said in a recent phone conversation.

The hour-long "Meltdown Show" will feature costumes, cartooning and a chance to stump the author on "Wimpy Kid" trivia. The idea is for kids to participate, not just watch.

"It's all driven by a wheel, a spinning wheel that chooses what our next activity will be," Kinney said. Because the show is new territory[각주:2] for the author, "this could go terribly wrong," he said with a laugh.

The setting for the show and the new book is an epic snowball battle. Kinney remembers such neighborhood battles while growing up in Fort Washington, Maryland.

"We would do all the work of building the snow fort[각주:3], and some bigger kids would come and take it over," he said. "I remember getting my face stuffed in the snow. I remember people putting snow in my hat and shoving it on my head."

The book, which went on sale October 3o, has main character Greg Heffley and his friend Rowley Jefferson fighting for survival as they are caught between rival[각주:4] groups of neighbors.

"It's a really different kind of 'Wimpy Kid' book," Kinney said. "It's a war book. Greg's neighborhood turns into a war zone."

Greg's survival really isn't in question, especially when Kinney confirms that he has no plans to end the series.

"I've got my sights set on

20 (books). After that, who knows," he said. "There are a lot of people for whom this is a lot of fun."

Kinney hopes the fun will include the live show, which ends with hundreds of kids taking part in a snowball fight. To prevent the battle from getting too epic, Kinney said he has a rule. "The show ends when someone (in the audience) cries ... or when Jeff cries."

Teenagers do not get enough sleep, and 1 in 4 teens takes some kind of medicine to help.

Fewer than 3 percent of teens get the recommended eight or nine hours of sleep a night, according to a recent Pediatrics study. So, one-quarter of them seeks relief in herbal, over-the-counter pills and prescriptions.

The C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health, which was taken in September, found that 28 percent of 13- to 18-year-olds had tried some type of medication to help them sleep.

Sixteen percent said they had tried over-the-counter sleep medicines such as NyQuil or a "PM" version of pain reliever or cold medicine. These medicines are meant to help someone sleep when they are sick, but some people use them as sleep medicines, even when they are healthy. Fourteen percent said they used antihistamines that are normally used for allergies, like Benadryl. Five percent said they had used prescription sleep medicine. Even more turned to natural or herbal remedies, specifically melatonin, at 36 percent.

The Mott poll surveyed 1,018 parents about their teens' sleep problems.

Sleep Poll Had Some Alarming Numbers

Poll co-director Sarah Clark was alarmed. Only one-quarter of parents of teens with sleep problems had ever talked to a doctor about the problem.

"A big part of this is that people don't realize this is a topic they should bring up with their doctor. If doctors don't think to ask about it, then it's not addressed," Clark told a parenting website.

Clark said 10 percent of parents of teens with sleep problems attributed the issues to a health condition or medication. Doctors could adjust medications or address root causes such as chronic pain in student-athletes.

Dr. Amrita Dhanjal, a physician and behavioral health specialist, agreed that doctors need to talk about sleep with teens.

"Unless we are asking them, then problems are not going to be unmasked," Dhanjal said.

Doctors Are Not All On The Same Page

Doctors seem to agree that teens taking medication to help them sleep is risky. However, they disagree on which remedies pose the most harm.

Dhanjal believes prescription medications are the safest because they are tested and regulated. Supplements and other natural remedies do not get the same scrutiny.

"There are many supplements that get labeled natural and herbal but they are not FDA approved. This does not equate to a safe product for adults, but especially for children where drugs can get through the blood-brain barrier and have long-term effects. There are no studies to tell us otherwise," she said.

Dhanjal is not a fan of over-the-counter drugs either for the same reasons.

No studies have been done on the teen use of sleep medication remedies. Long-term use of over-the-counter sleeping aids can have serious side effects in older adults. And doctors disagree on what medication is safest for teens with sleep problems.

Prescription Medication Versus Natural Supplements

Dr. Sheila Tsai works at Sleep Medicine at National Jewish Health. She recommends natural supplements over prescription sleep aids.

Tsai said prescription medication carries a higher risk of side effects and addiction. Teens can build up a tolerance quickly.

She said that melatonin can be safe if used as directed and so can an occasional use of an antihistamine or Tylenol PM. Tsai defined occasional use as no more than one or two times a week and not more than one to two months.

"I do caution against taking any medications in general because of the teens' developing brain," Tsai said. "They need to seek help from a primary care doctor or a medical provider."

Parents were more aligned in their views than doctors. Sixty percent believed that natural, herbal sleep remedies were the safest. They were less positive about over-the-counter sleep medicine (23 percent said it was safe). They were not certain about prescription sleep medicine (6 percent viewed them as safe).

Parents reported that doctors recommended prescription sleep medication more often than over-the-counter medications.

Electronics Share Some Of The Blame

Teens face health risks from sleep aids. They also face risks from lack of sleep. Teens who lose sleep risk heart problems, engaging in risky behavior, and could become more at-risk of suicide.

A study published in the journal Pediatrics found young teens robbed of proper rest struggled with weight gain, had higher blood pressure and lower levels of "good" cholesterol.

More than half of parents in the Mott Poll said teens' phones, social media and other electronics contributed to their lack of sleep. Homework and an irregular schedule were other reasons listed.

Before trying sleep aids, establish a regular sleep schedule, Tsai said. In the last five years, Tsai has seen an influx of teens in her own sleep clinic.

"There's more electronic usage and I feel like our teens have higher rates of anxiety or depression, and that plays a role in our sleep," she said.

To sleep better, experts recommend establishing a regular, relaxing bedtime routine that includes winding-down time before going to bed. They recommend making the bedroom an inviting, relaxing environment. It should be clean, uncluttered and dark. Limit or avoid naps and caffeine close to bedtime. Exercise is also helpful to aid sleep.

Teens unaware of health risks of vaping, as popularity increases

The students wait eagerly for their teachers to turn their backs.

That’s their cue to reach quietly for a small, sleek device they can easily conceal in their palms.

It resembles a flash drive, but instead of computer files, this device stores nicotine.

They take a hit, sucking on the device as they would a cigarette.

Then, “they blow into their backpacks … or into their sweater when the teacher isn’t looking,” said Elijah Luna, 16, a sophomore at Vista del Lago High School in Folsom, California, about 30 miles east of Sacramento.

The vapor cloud is so small and dissipates so quickly that teachers are usually none the wiser, said Luna, who added he’s never tried it himself.

The device is a Juul, a popular electronic cigarette that’s a sensation among teens, especially in wealthier neighborhoods — and a nightmare for school administrators and public health advocates.

“I think this is going to be the health problem of the decade,” said Milagros Vascones-Gatski, a substance abuse counselor at Yorktown High School in Arlington, Virginia. In nearly 17 years working with teens, she said, she’s never seen a tobacco product become so popular so quickly.

Three to four students are caught smoking e-cigarettes on campus each week, usually Juuls, and some are suspended, she said.

Vascones-Gatski, along with other concerned educators and health care experts, consider “Juuling” more than youthful rebellion.

Because it is high in nicotine, they fear the devices are extremely addictive for this vulnerable population.

To combat the spread of the devices, some schools have banned flash drives as well, to avoid any confusion between the items.

Yorktown High even removed the main entrance doors from student bathrooms at the beginning of the school year to dissuade students from vaping inside.

Despite these efforts, teens across America continue smoking the stuff in class, in hallways, in restrooms and at school sporting events.

Because it’s referred to as Juuling, not smoking or vaping, some students may think what they’re doing is harmless, said Pamela Ling, a professor at the University of California-San Francisco School of Medicine.

“They may not even know it contains nicotine.”

But it does — and a significant amount.

One Juul “pod,” the nicotine cartridge inserted into the smoking device and heated, delivers about 200 puffs, about as much nicotine as a pack of cigarettes, according to the product website.

Assuming a teen smokes one pod a week, “in five weeks, that’s like 100 cigarettes,” Ling said.

“By that point, you’re considered an established smoker.”

E-cigarettes, also known as vapes, are battery-operated devices that heat up liquid nicotine to generate an aerosol that users inhale. Smoking e-cigs is more discreet and easier to get away with than traditional cigarettes.

In 2016, California increased the minimum age to purchase tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, from 18 to 21.

Experts predicted the change would make it harder for teens to get tobacco products from their slightly older friends, and it seems to be working, according to a recent report.

But some health care advocates now worry that devices like the Juul could reverse that progress.

Although its manufacturer, Juul Labs, said the device is intended exclusively for adult use, it is appealing to youth because it can be easily charged on a laptop, its decal covers come in colorful designs, and the pods are available in flavors such as mango, mint and crème brûlée.

The odor Juuls produce is subtle and could easily be mistaken for a lotion or body spray.

“It’s stinky and fruity,” said Luna’s friend Cody Maratas, of the smell he encounters inside school restrooms when others are Juuling.

In a Reddit forum dedicated to Juuling in schools, some users who identify themselves as students say school restrooms smell much nicer now as a result.

Other online users describe “craving nicotine” and complain about “fiends” who ask to borrow their Juuls at school. One has solved this by charging freshmen $3 for a hit.

An article from Berkeley High School’s student newspaper described students who seek Juuls from others because they “love the head rush.”

“That’s a symptom of nicotine addiction,” Ling said.

Juul Labs said it wants to help schools get its products off their campuses.

Spokeswoman Christine Castro said the company has created a curriculum to educate youth about Juul and nicotine addiction, with input from academics. It’s available for any school that is interested, she said.

“This product is solely for adult smokers,” said Castro.

“We absolutely condemn kids using our products.”

Castro said the company limits online purchases to individuals 21 or older.

To browse the site, you need only click on a box pledging you’re of age.

But to buy, you must create a profile.

Customer information is verified through multiple databases and, if that fails, customers must upload a photo identification, she said.

However, Castro conceded that it is harder to control sales on third-party sites like eBay or Craigslist.

She urged consumers to report suspicious sales to the company’s youthprevention@juul.com email address.

Juul Labs may follow up with secret shopper visits to stores suspected of selling the product to underage customers, she said.

If users get through the age-verification process online, they can buy a Juul starter kit, which includes the vaping pen and four pods, for $50.

That’s expensive for most high school students — which is why Juuling might be more prevalent in affluent communities.

“In order to vape, you need money,” said Vascones-Gatski, noting that most students at her high school either work or receive big allowances.

Vince Willmore, vice president of communications at the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, applauds efforts taken by schools, but he thinks the burden shouldn’t fall solely on educators and parents.

The Food and Drug Administration “regulates tobacco products … and we think it’s important that the FDA take action to protect kids from Juul and other e-cigarettes,” he said.

Last year, the agency delayed regulations that could have yanked many e-cigarette products from the market, possibly including the Juul, while it studies whether these devices might actually help longtime smokers wean off traditional cigarettes.

“That basically locked in the products that are in the market for another four years,” Willmore said.

Meanwhile, schools continue the battle.

At Needham High School in Massachusetts, Principal Aaron Sicotte said e-cigarettes started appearing on his campus last school year, and soon Juul became the most popular brand.

The school has alerted staff “so that when these fall out of students’ bags, teachers don’t hand them back,” he said.

While the hype surrounding Juul might die down, Sicotte doesn’t expect vaping to go away.

“I think this is something that will remain in the fabric of adolescence,” he said.

“The access is too easy, the draw is too great, and the push through advertising is too significant.”
